Sum up
Sri Lanka resonates to the sound of drumming, and with the help of Red Dot, a teacher from a long line of professional drummers can reveal the basics of how to play as well as understand the history and importance of drums in Sri Lanka.
Duration: 3 hours
Best Time: Year-round
Additional Information
Traditional drums have been a mainstay of the Sri Lankan’s way of life for more than 2000 years, played on occasions of cultural significance and at times of great joy and sadness.
Our traditional teacher descends from a long line of professional drummers and will invite you into his home a short distance from the centre of Kandy.
With the help of an interpreter, you will learn about the importance and significance of drums and music at a traditional ceremony and understand the uses of the different types of drums in use.
Beginners or musicians alike can go at the pace that suits them. At the end of the activity, you can even attempt to play in harmony with your teacher who is happy to join in with experts and novices alike. Children will also find the experience very enjoyable.
Finally, if you fancy yourself as a Sri Lanka drummer, you can try on the distinctive headdress. Well worth a photograph and a marvellous holiday memory!
