Intrepid Hike in Knuckles
Sum up
The main element of this extended activity is a half-day hike through thick jungle to an abandoned house in the middle of the glorious Knuckles Mountain Range in the Kandyan foothills: expect to see stunning hill country scenery and varied wildlife during your trek, but not any other travellers. You will also have the chance to learn about traditional village life in Sri Lanka during an initial overnight stay in your host’s home. Be warned that the accommodation for this three-day experience is very basic, and you may come across leeches during the rainy season.
Duration: 2 nights / 3 days
Best Time: December to March, July and August
Additional Information
Begin with a tour of the markets, led by your host, in the town of Rattota near Matale on the outskirts of Kandy, before taking a scenic 1.5-hour drive to your host’s village which lies in the heart of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Upon arrival, settle into your room in your host’s home and join him and his wife for a delicious traditional Sri Lankan lunch, prepared with the exotic vegetables and spices that you saw at the markets. Afterwards, explore the village at leisure: admire the beautiful views; go on a gentle stroll through the surrounding countryside; spot birds, and – if you’re feeling brave – take a dip in the river. The evening will be spent in conversation with your hosts over another mouth-watering authentic meal.
We recommend rising early on the second day to make the most of the cooler morning temperatures. Your trek takes you along clear pathways through thick jungle against a dramatic mountain backdrop, and the views are mesmerising. Your guide will help you spot local wildlife as you go. You will arrive at a deserted village, where you will spend the afternoon and night, in time for lunch. In the afternoon, absorb the total tranquillity of your surroundings, either on another short hike to a beautiful viewpoint or with a good book. The day will end with a vegetarian dinner around a crackling bonfire and shared stories between you and your host. Please note that although a room at the abandoned house here has been renovated for your use, there are no bathroom facilities, no electricity and no phone signal.
Wake at dawn on your final day and watch the sun rise as you listen to the sound of birdsong, then transfer back to the village for breakfast with your host family.
