Treks and Tea at Amba Estate
Sum up
This four-night stay at Amba Estate , an organic farm on the outskirts of Ella in Sri Lanka’s south-east hill country, is a unique experience that will make a fantastic addition to your Sri Lanka itinerary if you are a walking enthusiast, if you want to learn more about Ceylon tea and Sri Lankan cuisine, and if you are simply seeking somewhere quiet and picturesque away from the tourist trail. Go on glorious hikes of varying lengths; pick tea and learn how it is processed; discover the delights of traditional Sri Lankan dishes, and picnic, read or practice yoga in scenic spots.
Duration:4 nights / 5 days
Best Time: December to March, August and September
Additional Information
During your stay, you will have several trekking opportunities, including an independent hike to Eagle Rock to see the sunrise and an optional excursion to a caving system and remote waterfall. The walking highlight will be the hike to Ella Rock, a moderately difficult trek which involves some steep climbs and uneven paths but will be manageable for most. Although Ella Rock is a popular tourist site, the trail from Amba Estate is an almost deserted ‘back route’, so you can enjoy the spectacular views and extraordinary flora without the crowds.
You will also have ample time to explore Amba Estate’s organic farm, where you will find a variety of exotic fruits, vegetables and spices, as well as an abundance of tropical flowers and trees. You can take a cooking class and learn how to make traditional jackfruit curry, using produce from the garden. Amba Estate also has an old tea factory on-site as is known for its artisan teas, which you can sample during a teaology session. You also have the chance to pick tea in the fields with experienced locals.
Apart from walking and exploring the estate, you can also head into the nearby village to sample local delicacies and see traditional handicrafts being made. In your spare time, rest and relax in your tranquil surroundings – read a good book whilst lolling in a hammock, or take a picnic lunch to the nearby natural pool.
All meals are included during your stay, from lunch on the day of arrival to breakfast on the day of departure. Be aware that there may be leeches during the rainy season, and we recommend bringing insect repellent. Other recommended items are walking shoes, swimwear, activewear and a torch.
