Kovils in Colombo

Kovils in Colombo

Sum up

The city of Colombo has several Hindu Kovils, all decorated with colourful, ornate statues and shrines dedicated to different gods and deities. A visit to a Kovil, especially during the time of a pooja – a ritual offering devotion to the gods – is a mesmerising experience involving the sound of clanging bells and prayers being chanted and the intoxicating smells of oil lamps and incense. The new and old Kathiresan Kovils, dedicated to God Skanda (the god of war and victory),are located in Pettah. The oldest Kovil in Colombo is the Sri Kailawasanthan Swami Devasthanam.
