Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island

Sum up

Pigeon Island, named after the Blue Rock Pigeon that breed there, is one of Sri Lanka’s two marine national parks, consisting of two small islands just a short boat ride from the coastline of Nilaveli in Trincomalee on the north-east coast. The islands are an ideal place for snorkelling, surrounded by coral reefs and soft coral which are home to many different types of fish, including Blacktip Reef Shark, and several species of endangered marine turtle, including Hawksbill, Green and Olive Ridley.

Duration: 2 hours

Best Time: May to October

Additional Information

On one side of the main island, you can see lots of colourful tropical fish. The other side is home to many dramatic rock formations close to the surface and has deeper water – here you can find marine turtles and blacktip reef sharks swimming below the fish which stay close to the surface. After snorkelling, explore the coral on the island and drink in the panoramic sea views.

Note: You will need to take your own snorkelling equipment. This can usually be provided by the hotel.
