Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka
Sum up
Kalpitiya is not just the finest kite surfing destination in Sri Lanka, it is also one of the best in the world. This laid-back spot is not Sri Lanka’s only kite surfing destination – you can also take to the water on Sri Lanka’s north-west coast in the popular beach resort of Negombo and at Mannar Island, where relatively few tourists venture. But it is Kalpitiya which has attracted most recognition in a fast-growing water-sport.
Duration: 3 hours
Best Time: May to October, December to March
Additional Information
Kalpitiya is ideal for both beginners and advanced kite-surfers with this thin strip of land offering a lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. The lagoon, sand banks, remote islets, reef and the Indian Coeab provide ideal kite-surfing spots to touch up your technique and your tan. And it rarely lacks enough breeze to put a smile on the face of kite-surfing enthusiasts.
Red Dot Tours partners with Kitesurfing Lanka so you can make kitesurfing part of your holiday at value-for-money prices. Kitesurfing Lanka is run by experienced kitesurfers who are IKO (International Kite Boarding Organisation) certified. Kitesurfing Lanka also runs a school that offers introductory to advanced courses in kitesurfing. Equipment including the board, kite, harness, and boots are available for rent.
There are two distinct kite-surfing seasons in Kalpitiya. One season runs from mid-December to mid-March, smack in the middle of the peak season on Sri Lanka’s west coast. There is also a second season from May to October when the weather is also largely dependable. Both seasons are warm, mostly dry and breezy, with wind direction changes ensuring enough variety. The vibe in Kalpitiya will delight those looking for a largely youthful, relaxed atmosphere with an increasing emphasis on sustainable living.
